Moral Judgment Fails Without Feelings

In earlier posts i talked about how modern neuroscience with the use of magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) technology has learned how devotion on charisma tends to shut down parts of the brain .

Its quote: Parts of the prefrontal and anterior cingulate cortices, which play key roles in vigilance and scepticism when judging the truth and importance of what people say, were deactivated when the subjects listened to a supposed healer

In the Oxford Journal it suggests .

The function of the prefrontal cortex is as fascinating as it  is elusive. Whilst damage to more posterior regions produces fairly blatant deficits of function, the effect of frontal brain lesions has proved far more difficult to characterize, although no less devastating to the lives of patients. Early reports told of individuals with no apparent loss of intellectual function, yet whose behaviour changed so drastically that they were never able to resume the lives that they had led before. Part of the problem has undoubtedly been that the cognitive processes underlying abilities which are impaired by prefrontal damage, such as planning, reasoning and problem solving, have not been well understood.

It talks about.

behavioural problems of patients with ventromedial lesions in terms of their failing to experience appropriate  emotional responses, which in turn impairs their decision making ability

So it seems this prefrontal cortex is an extremely important part of the brain for us human if we wish to be making good thoughtful kind decisions.

While reading the ScienceDailey i noticed another article written in March 22nd 2007 titled: Moral Judgement Fails Without Feelings

It says.

Consider the following scenario: someone you know has AIDS and plans to infect others, some of whom will die. Your only options are to let it happen or to kill the person.

Do you pull the trigger?

Most people waver or say they could not, even if they agree that in theory they should. But according to a new study in the journal Nature, subjects with damage to a part of the frontal lobe make a less personal calculation.

The logical choice, they say, is to sacrifice one life to save many.

Conducted by researchers at the University of Southern California, Harvard University, Caltech and the University of Iowa, the study shows that emotion plays an important role in scenarios that pose a moral dilemma.

If certain emotions are blocked, we make decisions that — right or wrong — seem unnaturally cold

Ahh people who make decisions that right or wrong seem unnaturally cold … Man that sure rings a bell for me ! … Cant help feeling that sounds mighty like a whole lot of  devoted on charisma faithful folks i know . Their thoughts often seem mighty harsh cold and very unnatural to me , as they dream about themselves and the gambling habit on the charisma of old Jesus and their hopes of eternal afterlife .

Goodness know what all those other devoted christian folk on Peebs net hope to really achieve demanding other brain-dead Christian Exclusive Brethren might somehow be able to spark a few brain waves and somehow make some better decisions ?. Seems a bit like a case of the blind trying to be leading the blind to me . Kinda a bit like wishful thinking .Not that i blame them ! , hell i know how painful ! life can seem when faith dulls your family’s brain and heart until its cold as ice . But hey it aint the Exclusive Brethrens fault , they didn’t create this faith brain-dead surgery . Brain-dead surgery that not only deadens the brain and hardens the hearts of Exclusive Brethren and Renton Brethren , but also surgically removes parts of the brain needed to help spark a bit of life and brain activity into mega other Christians and faithful folk who silently stand by doing nothing ! while these people ruin people lives and even push a number of people to suicide .

Oh yes siree … What hope is there for a Exclusive Brethren or a Renton Brethren  , when most of the rest ! of the faithful devoted faith brains are also shut down by all the charisma of faith ? . What do they expect  …. a freaking miracle ?

This article says of people with these same parts of the brain-damaged in accidents , as opposed to the faithful folks brain which has just being shut down by devotion on all the charisma

“Because of their brain damage, they have abnormal social emotions in real life. They lack empathy and compassion,”

I  myself notice this sad phenomenon when discussing matters of faith with many faithful folk , including many faithful folk i  talk with on blogs . They often seem cold and heartless , and i find i need to try to explain many matters ! because they just don’t seem to possess the empathy and compassion needed to be able to even fully understand where im actually coming from .

Oh sure they feel so wonderful about how their church group visits hospitals and sure is feeling so great about how their group is involved in charity blah blah …. All the charismatic stuff ! . Yeah they sure got that meme sorted and well rehearsed.

But when you talk about other deeper issues … Like how faith is effecting many folks and hurting many people …..And how Jesus only had a bad weekend ! really since evidently he died and then was resurrected …. And try explaining little was actually paid for on any cross because some folks pay for other people rights to these beliefs …. With their whole earthly lives being separated and divided from family and some even pay with their own suicide ! … such is the extreme extent of the pain they experience .

I find quite often it almost seems like im just talking to a stone . It just don’t seem to connect . Its lots like im talking to an accident victim who had the prefrontal parts of the brain-damaged , meaning he/she just aint able to even think straight anymore and has become kinda dead and cold and lacking in the emotion needed to even honestly care.

And with accident victims this is easy to understand ! … But of faithful folk who so often like to profess and claim honestly being the loving caring kind ?

To me it seems kinda very false . Even though i still see them as being victims of accidents …. The accident of humanity which sadly evolved these faith devotions with charisma that modern neuro science is now showing us happens to help shut down parts of the brain that was supposed to help us think and have emotions and care ! and not become heartless faith gamblers who only tend to consider ourselves and our right to some supposed salvation and eternal life.

Emotion ? or my eternal life ? Emotion ? or my eternal life ? D`OH! ... Operator! Give me the number for 911!

About ExEB

I'm a agnostic/atheist . Interested in learning more about science. I also am an "ex-member" of a group most publicly known within modern times, as the Exclusive Brethren. Whom are an off-shoot of the original Plymouth Brethren group. I'd say it likely my personality could possibly be described as quirky. You know ,as in being , unconventional , unorthodox , unusual, off-centre, strange, bizarre, weird, peculiar, odd, freakish, outlandish, offbeat, out of the ordinary, bohemian, alternative, zany I'm sure iv'e been classed as "crazy" . Many times But then, being born into a group like the exclusive brethren. Doesn't lend itself ? to tend to produce things considered as being "very normal" .Does it I escaped the Exclusive Brethren cult as a 15 year old teenager. Even since that time iv'e been trying to adjust to living life outside the cult. With much of my life being lived within the genre of "wild colonial boy" style. In the general sense of a church-rebel picking and choosing from role models who appeared within-life along the way. But as the exclusive brethren cult had traditionally maintained a general church-rule , of need to shun and totally excommunicate any ex member of their group.Treating such people as if they were dead. Thus this situation developed more to do with my need of following traditionally enforced church-rule , as apposed to it being so much about "life-choices". Certain emotional experiences, and parts of life in general, have led to me adopting a sense of low self esteem. Which is a situation i still deal with from time to time. Through my ongoing interest in science. I find i am able to gather more information to help me better understand my situation. Much about life for me, has often seemed like a massive puzzle. With many missing pieces.

  1. I am usually a great analyzer however here I am in all appreciation.

  2. Amazing article. Did you study the related piece within the Huffington Publish a while again? Evidently more and more mainstream media are having to pay attention to this. I hope your web site will get more and more subscribers as this problem will get more protection, because it is a superb useful resource.

    • ExEB says:

Hi …Well i hope somebody does start to pay a little more attention to this type of situation .Because at present the only folk getting any protection are the faith groups , who all still hide behind the outdated ancient laws of freedom of faith

Freedoms of faith ?? . So exactly where do these faith freedoms start , or end ? … I mean in many countries we dont allow blatant discrimination between gender with employment .Why should we allow faith freedoms to promote gender discrimination in Churches ?.

Wake up folks !!! ….These nasty faithful folks have been the acting role models within all our communities , since the Noah myth first began and long before it also ……And yet we will send many men to jail for bashing and treating women with great disrespect ?….What else different do folks really expect ? ….Bloody miracles ? .

We allow faith freedoms to continue to promote bigotry and division and shunning and all sorts of nastiness within Church groups …..These same church folk have long been role models within all our communities ….. Yet when bigotry errupts and nastiness overflows out into our streets , and different street gangs start shunning each other and getting nasty and bashing each other ….. We send them off to jail ? ….Many of them young folks ! simply following the role models

Yes moral judgement fails without feelings . Our laws are outdated and totally biased ! by the ancient power held within faith …..Societies devotion to the ancient charismatic figures of Jesus or Mahammad or what ever else ….Has caused our community judgment to fail …..Our judgement has not been based on emotion ….its been based on the bias of devotion to ancient charismatic figures

In effect …our laws have been decided on by the faithful mental retards within our communities.Folks focused on matters of Charisma ,whos brains then do not think properly or use proper scepticism ! or any decent critical thought ! .

Parts of these people brains have shut down .The parts that are supposed to help them decide whats “right” and “fair” etc .

Instead their thoughts have become biased and devoted (focused) on the ancient charismatic thought , that faith should rule and so total freedom of faith should exist.

And as such all our societies have also continually paid an extremely great price ! .

Yes i do read bits and pieces written within the Huffington Post from time to time . Science is the best hope we have left ….We need advances in neuroscience as hard evidence that can show these problems actually exist !

But why ? …some people might ask

The reason we really need the hard indisputable evidence of neuroscience ….Comes back to the fact ….”Moral Judgement Fails Without Feelings ”

Our societies have lost the emotional “feeling” ….Our societies have become ruled by power and ritual the strongest powers have had charismatric faith figures behind them.
