Alan Watts ~ Polar Thinking (Clinging and Letting Go)

Maybe the exclusive brethren didn’t understand polarity?

Brethren had created the scenario where by you’d need to be on one side, or the other.

Those were the only two option

1.Either with us (positive)

2 Or against us (negative)

That’s what then created all the main problems for Brethren too?

IE: James Taylor Jr @ Aberdeen

1. For us

2. Or against us

No option, left open, for anyone to stand anywhere “in between”,was there?

=The

“my way or the highway Brethren”

At the end of the day, Brethren have now done complete u turns on a number of things of what at one time they’d had used to be “totally outlaw” .

Haven’t they?

For instance, they way that not so many years ago, they’d outlawed the option for Brethren to go to beaches. To go on holiday. Or to use computers and faxes . To go hunting and fishing. To eat in restaurants. For the women to be allowed to cut their hair. And so on

Those things above, had previously all “used to be” completely outlawed (IE: were all on the “negative side” of polarity)

There was “no room” made for middle ground? (positive/negative)

Was there?

So that therefore had meant, that anyone who’d have been caught with doing those things. Would need to be excommunicated(IE:positive polarity)

Fast forward to now, in these more modern times today, nowadays most all of these things of what previously were once “outlawed” , have now been “made room for” these things to be allowed to be ok for those Brethren who’d choose to be doing them (IE:positive/negative polarity now)

These days ,within Brethren. There is now “middle ground” reopened again. Nowadays you now no need be judged as necessarily being “either for, or against” something.

Would you?

You can decide for yourself . You can choose which one you’ll decide to do, which ones you wont do. And yet the Brethren-today can now still find a way in which to co-exist (negative/positive polarity in action)

That’s the only decent way what it works? . Isn’t it

For instance, as a child who’d been born among Brethren, i were “an atheist” from “the get go” about as far back as i can remember. But because the Brethren-way had not made any room for middle ground. Because Brethren “polarity was only negative or positive“.

“Nothing in between”

This then meant that ,out of necessity, someone such as myself, would then also have need to be forced to “pretend” to believe.

We’d basically been put in a position where by we’d “need to be telling lies”

Not by choice. But due to “the-Brethren’s way” of making bumbling mistakes

Sadly, the Brethren still cannot bring themselves to become adult-like enough, even as yet, so as to offer us any proper open apology

They cant

They’ll bumble along, and only allow themselves to “be seen” to make “very half hearted” apology

At best

Which is sad

Sad “for the Brethren”

I guess perhaps because, they’d still rather to allow “pride” to get in their way

Maybe?

Which is crazy

The Brethren seem to still see “an act of an open apology” as if it would need  be seen as being “a negative”

They’d (mistakenly) be looking upon it as if it would be “a negative”

While seeing “the maintenance of their pride” as if that would be something to be considered as being “a positive”

Its still the same old “black and white” type of thinking, again, though isn’t it

Because, truth be known, the act of offering open apology, to all the ex Brethren that they’d harmed throughout the years past . Is nether negative or positive, is it. As its actually something whats “somewhere in between”

IE: Its middle ground

Because

  1. When they’d choose to apologize openly (a negative)
  2.  At that same moment, right then, they’d have then also been able to have “conquered and overcome” their pride (a positive)

So therefore this then suggest to us that the act of offering an open apology, would not necessarily need to be “fully negative” , or “fully positive” , either

Its actually going to involve a bit of both polarity (IE:positive/negative)

I sometimes wonder why they wouldn’t see this.

Why?

I sense that perhaps there’d be a better chance that the youth today, might see a easier way, to see this .

Pity that the Brethren youth wouldn’t step forward and begin to take more of a leadership roll themselves

Together they could combine to become “a real force for good“, within the Brethren circle

They really could

These days, the youth now have a “far better chance” to begin to help make good again, on things what have been wrong in time past.

Help the Brethren to see the value of making room for middle ground (positive/negative)

About ExEB

I'm a agnostic/atheist . Interested in learning more about science. I also am an "ex-member" of a group most publicly known within modern times, as the Exclusive Brethren. Whom are an off-shoot of the original Plymouth Brethren group. I'd say it likely my personality could possibly be described as quirky. You know ,as in being , unconventional , unorthodox , unusual, off-centre, strange, bizarre, weird, peculiar, odd, freakish, outlandish, offbeat, out of the ordinary, bohemian, alternative, zany I'm sure iv'e been classed as "crazy" . Many times But then, being born into a group like the exclusive brethren. Doesn't lend itself ? to tend to produce things considered as being "very normal" .Does it I escaped the Exclusive Brethren cult as a 15 year old teenager. Even since that time iv'e been trying to adjust to living life outside the cult. With much of my life being lived within the genre of "wild colonial boy" style. In the general sense of a church-rebel picking and choosing from role models who appeared within-life along the way. But as the exclusive brethren cult had traditionally maintained a general church-rule , of need to shun and totally excommunicate any ex member of their group.Treating such people as if they were dead. Thus this situation developed more to do with my need of following traditionally enforced church-rule , as apposed to it being so much about "life-choices". Certain emotional experiences, and parts of life in general, have led to me adopting a sense of low self esteem. Which is a situation i still deal with from time to time. Through my ongoing interest in science. I find i am able to gather more information to help me better understand my situation. Much about life for me, has often seemed like a massive puzzle. With many missing pieces.
